みなさん、こんにちは、ハッピーオータム！紅葉も始まり、アメリカでは大学の出願シーズンが本格化しています。春に蒔いていた種を刈り取る時期でもあります。
今月は、私の前の職場の同僚であり、現在は友人であるめぐみさんとお話をする機会がありインタビューを行いました。
彼女にはアメリカに留学した経験があり、私は彼女へのインタビューをみなさんにお届けできることをとてもうれしく思います。
人種差別についての質問に対するめぐみの返答は想像しにくいかもしれませんが、Atellier Collegialでは、学生がアメリカで直面する可能性のある現実的な事例や、このような社会的課題を克服するためのサポートシステムを提供することが必要と考えています。
今回は、アメリカ留学を経験後、現在は日本でインターナショナルプレスクールの先生をしているメグミさんという女性にインタビューしました。彼女は高校からGraces Memorial High Schoolに通い、Clover Park Technical Collegeに進み今に至ります。
自己紹介と、アメリカに行った経緯を簡単に説明してください。
私は、メグミといいます。高校の時にアメリカに留学しました。
私は当初アメリカ留学についてあまり知らなかったので留学カウンセラーに手伝ってもらいました。
準備を始めて約半年後、私は飛行機の中にいました。
２．大学では何を勉強しましたか？
私のアメリカ中西部の大学に留学していました。その大学での専攻は、メディアのデザインとビデオ制作でした。ビデオ編集、照明、カメラワーク、演出、写真、ドローイングなどを学びました。
３．一番好きな授業とその理由を教えてください。
編集とスタジオカメラの授業が好きでした。編集は楽しかったです。
さまざまな角度からフィルムの長さを切り分けて貼り合わせ、BGMを追加し、自分の好きなものを作成できました。スタジオでの撮影は、その空気感がプロとして働いているような気分になれとても楽しかったです。
４．親しみを感じた教授、不快に感じた教授はいましたか？
そしてその理由を教えてください。
はい、親しみを感じた教授が何人かいました。素晴らしい教授たちで、とても優しかったです。彼らは私の良き理解者でしたし、私は彼らをとても尊敬していますし、今でもつながっています。
５．渡米する前にしておけばよかったと思うことはありますか？
もっと英語を話せるようになっていればよかったと思います。
６．ホームシックになりましたか？
そしてその時どのようにあなたはそれを克服しましたか？
最初の2ヶ月間は毎晩泣いていたと思います。ホストファミリーは素晴らしい人たちでしたが、とにかく寂しくて、毎晩ボーイフレンドや両親からの電話を待っていました。でもある時、このままでは英語が伸びないと思い電話を待つのをやめました。それからは日常生活に慣れ、少しずつ学校を楽しみ始めたのです。毎晩課題を終えることに一生懸命にならざるを得なかったこともあり、私はそもそも何を泣いていたかさえ次第に忘れていました。
７．アメリカ留学中に日本語を話したり日本の文化に触れることはありましたか？
はい、ありました。同じ高校に何人か日本人学生がいました。留学中は母国語を話す人と会話をしたり、親しくしないほうがいいと言う人もいますが、私は、彼らに出会い、たくさんの思い出を共有できたことは良かったです。
８．アメリカでは、学校、社会生活、
そしてあなたの将来を考える上でどのような課題に直面しましたか？
すべての授業で合格点をとることは、私にとってかなり大変なことでした。特に高校生の時は、授業にうまく参加できず居残りもさせられたので、スポーツなどの活動には参加できませんでした（＞-＜;）。
９．留学中に人種差別や排外などに直面したとき、
あなたの学校はそのような場合なにかサポートをしてくれましたか？
そしてあなたなら、アメリカに留学することに不安を抱えている学生にどのようなアドバイスをしたいですか？
若者のグループが乗った１台の車が近づいてきて汚い言葉で「出てけ」などと言いながらマクドナルドのバッグを私たちに投げつけてきたことを今でも鮮明に覚えています。
私はその日小さな湖にスキムボード（浅瀬での波乗り）をしに行きました。そこは以前アメリカ人の友人が連れて行ってくれた場所でしたが、その日私は日本人の友人と行きました。そこは、地元の若者たちにとって“隠れ家”的な場所だったようで、彼らはたぶん“よそ者”の私たちが来ることを快く思っていなかったのだと思います。「英語で話せ」と言われたり侮辱するようなふるまいをする人にも出会いました。
しかし、ほとんどの人はそういうことはなくとても優しかったです。
私が経験した留学は１０年前のことなのであまりうまくアドバイスできませんが、もし今私が再びアメリカ留学をするなら、私自身そして私のコミュニティのために向き合い、異なるバックグラウンドを持つ全ての人たちを尊重できる人でありたいと思います。
日本ではこのような経験はなかなかできません。アメリカにはたくさんの異人種がいて、だからこそこのような経験を素晴らしく、また興味深いものにしているのです。
１０．アメリカで勉強した中で一番良い思い出は何ですか？
突然思いついて、真夜中に友達とシアトルからサンフランシスコまで車で行き、大晦日をシアトルのスペースニードルで過ごしたことです。 オレゴンで見た星空は、私が今まで見た中で最も美しい光景でした！
また、友人の21歳の誕生日にストリップクラブに行ったこともあります。大学時代の素晴らしい友達との“クレイジー”な思い出はたくさんあります。
１１．あなたがアメリカで学んだ大切なことは何ですか？
日本人であることを誇らしく思うことと、“異なること”を恐れないことです。
１２．今でもその時の友達と連絡を取り合っていますか？
もちろん！
１３．海外で過ごした時間は、どのようにあなたを変えましたか？
アメリカに行った時私はとても若かったので、何でもできると思っていましたが、そのような考えはすぐに吹き飛ばされました。私はただとても利己的で甘やかされた子供でした。私は人々に感謝する方法や、自分自身のために誰かに依存するのではなく強くなる方法を学びました。
１４．将来的にあなたにどんな好機があると思いますか？
私は現在インターナショナルプリスクールで教師をしています。日々いつかこの子供たちが留学し、おそらく私と同じ苦労をすることになると思います。彼らに励ましと自信を与えるのが私の仕事ですが、すべてを簡単に手に入れさせるのではなく、子供たちが自分のために一生懸命努力する必要があるということも同時に彼らに伝えたいと思っています。私が彼らの永遠の”メンター”になれたらいいのにと思います。私の過去の経験が、私の教える子供たちの助けになればいいと思います。

Topic: Working Abroad, Studying Abroad, How did you live?
Hello everyone, Happy Autumn! As the leaves fall and college application season is in full swing we are sowing seeds to reap in the spring. This month, I had the opportunity to speak with my past coworker and current friend Megumi. She has first hand experience as a Japanese person studying abroad in America. I’m very excited to present this interview to you. Some of Megumi’s responses to questions about racism she felt may be a disconcerting to read, but at Atellier Collegial we are dedicated to giving our students a realistic idea of what they may face in America and providing a support system to help them overcome these societal challenges.
1.If you would introduce yourself and give us the short version of how you got to America.
I’m Megumi. I moved to the states when I was a Junior in high school. I didn’t know anybody there so I got some help from a study abroad agency. After about half a year of preparation, I was on a plane.
2.What did you study at college?
I went to college. My major was Video Production in media design and production. I learned video editing, lighting, camerawork, directing, photography, drawing, etc.
3.What was your favorite class? Why?
I loved Editing class and Studio camera operation the most. Editing was fun; cutting footage from different angles in pieces and sticking them together and adding music in the background. You can create whatever you want. Filming in the studio was something that makes you feel like you are working as a professional and I loved that atmosphere.
4.Were there any professors you felt connected with? Were there any professors you felt offended by? Why?
Yes, I had great professors and they were super kind. They were my mentors. I had huge respect for them. and still talk to them once in a while.
5.What did you wish you knew before you went to America?
I wish I knew how to speak english more.
6.Were you homesick? How did you overcome it?
I think I cried every night for the first two months. I had a wonderful host family, but I just felt so lonely and was waiting for a phone call from my boyfriend and my parents every night. But one day you just give up. You get used to daily life and start to enjoy your school little by little. And you need to study hard to finish your homework every night so you slowly forget what you were crying in the first place.
7.Were there opportunities to speak Japanese or connect with Japanese culture while studying in America?
Yes, I had some other Japanese students in the same high school. Some people say you shouldn’t speak or get close with people who speak your own language during your study abroad but for me I was so glad I could meet them and share so many memories together.
8.What challenges did you face abroad? For school, for social life, and for planning your future?
To pass all the classes was challenging for me. Especially when I was in high school I wasn’t doing great in lots of classes so teachers gave me detentions. I couldn’t join sports 🙁
9.Did you face any racism or xenophobia while abroad? Did your school offer any services or resources to help? What advice would you give to students who feel nervous about being a foreign student in America?
I remember clearly, one car with a young group drove by and they threw a bag of McDonald’s at us, saying “Leave” or “Get the **** out.” something like that. We were at this small hidden lake to go skimboarding. One of my American friend took us there before but I was there with my Japanese friends that day. It was like a “local” hidden spot for groups of young people, so I guess those people didn’t like us playing there? I was told to “Speak in English!” or met people with insulting behavior but MOST people were very friendly! That’s like 10 years ago, so I can’t give any advice but If I were a student again in America now, I would remind myself to stand up for myself and my community, show respect to everyone around you who has a different background. You can’t experience all that here in Japan. There are so many different people in America and that’s what makes it great and interesting.
10.What is your favorite memory from studying in America?
I spent new years eve at the Seattle Space Needle, after we drove down from Seattle to San Francisco with friends in the middle of the night just because we suddenly thought It would be fun. (starry sky somewhere in in the middle of nowhere in Oregon was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen!), Once, I took my friend to Strip Club for her 21st Birthday. There are lots of crazy memories with amazing friends from college.
11.What lessons did you learn in America that you brought back to Japan?
That I should be proud to be Japanese. Dare to be different.
12.Are you still in contact with any friends from America?
Yes!
13.How did your time abroad change you as a person?
I was so young when I went to America and I thought I could do everything by myself. That thought got blown away instantly. I was such a selfish and spoiled little kid. I learned how to appreciate people and also that you have to be so strong for yourself because nobody can help you but you.
14.What opportunities do you see for yourself in the future?
I work as a teacher at International Preschool now. Everyday I imagine maybe one day these kids will go to study abroad and probably have the same struggles I have had. It’s my job to give them encouragement and confidence but I also try to give them an idea that not everything is easy to get, and you need to work hard for it. I wish I could be their forever mentor, I wish my past experience will help someone for the better, especially my students.
